ABAYA (FERACE)
In the Ottoman period, the abaya was a garment worn by women to protect themselves from the public gaze, in accordance with the norms of the time. It was an elegant, draped garment, often made from the same fabric, complemented by a gathered bag, a veil covering the mouth and chin, and an umbrella. The abaya made it easier for women to go out in public, and from an ethnographic perspective, it is an important source for understanding our cultural heritage and the role of women in society.
