PRINTED COTTON FABRIC (BASMA)
One of the most well-known cotton fabrics used in traditional Anatolian clothing is basma. The origins of the basma technique in Anatolia date back to approximately 7000 BCE and are believed to have first been employed by the Hittites.
This traditional art of printing on fabric, known as yazmacılık, was practiced across Anatolia on handlooms. The introduction of industrial production of basma in Turkey began with the establishment of the Nazilli Sümerbank Printed Cotton Factory, inaugurated by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk on October 9, 1937.
